Whale Watching in Hermanus: When and Where to See Them

Hermanus is often called the best land based whale watching destination in the world, and once you have stood on the cliff path and watched a Southern Right whale roll through the bay, it is easy to see why. You do not need a boat, and you do not need to travel far. The whales come to you, often just metres from the rocks.

The best time of year to see whales

Southern Right whales visit Walker Bay every year to mate, calve and rest in the sheltered water. The season usually runs from June to December, with the peak months being September and October. This is when you are most likely to see mothers with their calves close to shore. If you can plan your visit for spring, you will give yourself the best possible chance.

The best places to watch from the shore

The Cliff Path is the heart of whale watching in Hermanus. It runs for about twelve kilometres along the coastline, and much of it is easy walking with plenty of benches and lookout points. Some of the favourite spots include Gearing's Point, the Old Harbour and Grotto Beach. Bring a hat, some water and a pair of binoculars, and simply take your time.

Listen for the whale crier

Hermanus is the only town in the world with a whale crier, who walks the streets blowing a kelp horn to announce where the whales have been seen. It is a charming tradition, and a lovely way to know which part of the coast to head for on any given day.

Bringing the whales home

For many visitors, the sight of a whale in Walker Bay becomes one of the strongest memories of their trip.
