Best Things to Do in Hermanus: A Local's Guide

Hermanus is a small town with a big heart, and there is far more to do here than most visitors expect. As someone who lives and paints on this coast, I am always happy to share the places that make it special. Whether you are here for a weekend or a long, slow holiday, here are my favourite things to do in Hermanus.

Walk the Cliff Path

The Cliff Path is the soul of Hermanus. It follows the coastline for about twelve kilometres, past rock pools, hidden coves and sweeping views of Walker Bay. In whale season you can watch Southern Right whales from the path itself. Bring good shoes, take your time, and stop often.

Visit the Old Harbour

The Old Harbour is a national monument and a lovely spot to soak up the town's fishing history. You will find the old fishing boats, a small museum and rock pools that children love. It is also one of the best places to simply sit and watch the sea.

Taste the Hemel-en-Aarde wines

Just behind the town lies the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, one of South Africa's finest wine regions. The name means Heaven and Earth, and the cool climate produces beautiful Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Many farms welcome visitors for tastings with views over the vines.

Browse the markets and galleries

Hermanus has a warm creative community. On weekends you will find local makers at the market, and small galleries dotted through the town show the work of Overberg artists. It is the perfect way to find a handmade memento of your trip.

Relax on the beaches

Grotto Beach is a long, golden stretch that is ideal for a walk or a swim, while Voelklip and Kammabaai are lovely for a quieter afternoon. Pack a picnic and watch the light change over the bay.

Take a piece of Hermanus home
